Getting 2016 Off to a Meaningful Start (pt.3)

4) Let your flesh feel something: If you are anything like me, food is NOT your weakness. Everyone has something they have a slight addiction to. For some people it might be TV shows, sweets, computer games, books, gossip blogs, coffee, anything that completely gratifies your flesh basically.

If food – which is the general item of deprivation in fasts – is not a big deal for you, then I suggest choosing something else that you know your flesh will rebel against you for. Otherwise, you’ve just gone on a hunger strike for no worthy cause. I can go all day without eating and be cool so I try to vary my own fast with different things including my eating habits just so that my body knows it’s being subjected.

For my current fasting for this month, I fast till 2pm every weekday where I don’t eat anything apart from drink hot water with lemon in it to keep warm and keep my breath fresh. Now, I don’t like drinking water so my flesh is feeling something but at the same time my skin is benefiting from the increased water intake. I’m also a snacker so what I do is, I break my fast at 2pm with fruits and vegetables and some rice crackers just to prepare my body for food much later on in the day and keep my energy levels up at work after using a large amount of brain power from the morning, especially on very pressured days. Then I just continue with hot water and lemon till past 6 when I have a proper meal and shut it down for the day.

On the weekends, I can stretch my fast and just go dry till evening time because I won’t be burning as much energy and therefore not risk any health benefits. I’m also usually more peckish when I’m not doing much and lounging at home so this is harder than on weekdays when I’m distracted by work

Do I wanna reach for that bag of sweets and crisps and stuff my face while watching shows? Do I wanna get a white chocolate mocha on my way to work in the mornings? Mmm yeah but that’s the point. If my flesh is being subjected to some form of control, it leaves more room for my Spirit to maneuver.

The aim is to ensure my body doesn’t get completely satisfied so that my flesh knows it’s fighting a losing battle.

There are also variations of fasts that one can do such as the Daniel fast, liquid fast, dry fasting, social media fasting, technology fasting –  you know what will be the hardest for you so pick it and ask the Holy Spirit to take over 😀 . That being said it was food Satan used to bring mankind down (remember Garden of Eden?) so don’t now say because food is not your vice, you’ll stuff your face and just sacrifice something less painful for you. Just saying…

5) Holy, holy, holy!: Now if you want your whole fast and prayers to not even scratch the surface of Heaven, you can ignore this point. But don’t get mad when your expectations are dashed against the rocks of disappointment.

Guys, there’s no other way to put it: a life of continuous and unrepentant sin will block your prayers from being answered and further separate you from God. I mean, God sent His only begotten Son to die for us so that we would forever be reconciled to Him because of the sacrifice Christ made. So if you keep on rolling around in the very thing God thought was so demeaning to our relationship and fellowship with Him, how you think that’s gon’ fly?

But hey, don’t take it from me. Here’s a more precise breakdown:

Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness [ignoring God’s law by action or neglect or by tolerating wrongdoing—being unrestrained by His commands and His will]. You know that He appeared [in visible form as a man] in order to take away sins; and in Him there is [absolutely] no sin [for He has neither the sin nature nor has He committed sin or acts worthy of blame]. No one who abides in Him [who remains united in fellowship with Him—deliberately, knowingly, and habitually] practices sin. No one who habitually sins has seen Him or known Him. Little children (believers, dear ones), do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who practices righteousness [the one who strives to live a consistently honorable life—in private as well as in public—and to conform to God’s precepts] is righteous, just as He is righteous. The one who practices sin [separating himself from God, and offending Him by acts of disobedience, indifference, or rebellion] is of the devil [and takes his inner character and moral values from him, not God]; for the devil has sinned and violated God’s law from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. No one who is born of God [deliberately, knowingly, and habitually] practices sin, because God’s seed [His principle of life, the essence of His righteous character] remains [permanently] in him [who is born again—who is reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose]; and he [who is born again] cannot habitually [live a life characterized by] sin, because he is born of God and longs to please Him. (1 John chapter 3 verses 4 to 9)

Imma just let you ruminate on that one.

I plead with you to not use your own hand to pour sand in your own garri, okay? (Nigerian expression which basically means don’t mess up your life by your own doing 🙂 ). If you’re a child of God, start using this period to let the world know you are not here to joke around. If you do your best to live a life of holiness, God rewards that for sure!

Yes I know some people struggle a lot more than some others when it comes to sin but use this time of fasting and praying to work in collaboration with the Holy Spirit to break sin’s dominion over your life. You are already loosed from it because Christ made sure of that but you gotta walk like you believe it in order for it to become your reality. I’m rooting for ya!

Well, that’s all from me for now Saints of God.

Wishing you the very best times ahead filled with clarity, revelation and the strength and boldness to pursue, overtake and recover all that is yours. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Lots of love,
